Cell Phones: We’ve Come A long Way
I must thank Todd Catalano (Twitter: @wnylibraryguy) for passing this infographic along. It is a history of the cell phone. It is just a reminder of how far we’ve come over the years.
In 1989 I was standing at Navy Pier in Chicago. It was an extremely hot July day and the waterfront was a magnet. Probably three-quarters of the city had flocked there. Ironically the mass of humanity had only added to the oppressive heat.
If I had seen a cell phone before I don’t remember it. What is fixed in my memory is that event. Standing on Navy Pier and watching a cigar boat slowly pass by. The driver of the boat was using one of those huge brick cell phones (not unlike the Dynatac 8000X in the infographic). An event I’ll never forget, and never forget asking my uncle what exactly it was. Never dreaming that one day I’d have a phone in my hands, connected to this thing called the Internet, and listening to music

The first phone I recall was the one Dan Tana had in the show Vega$, it was a hard wired car phone and it was amazing to see him driving and talking.
